One of the questions I get the most, both online and in person, is “what is the difference between a soprano and a mezzo-soprano, exactly?” I want to launch this new series, Opera Explained, answering that question with some help from the 2019-20 Opera Colorado Artists in Residence. But without a show to unpack in an Opera 101 blog post or a world-class cast to interview, I am instead turning my attention to the questions that come my way every day. If we were working within a normal calendar, before the entire globe was interrupted by COVID-19, we’d be in the middle of rehearsals for Puccini’s Tosca. But, I will be the first to offer up the arts in general, and opera in particular, as the best medicine for all of us who are stuck inside, sheltered in place, waiting for this thing to pass us by.
